| Funding of Research |
Funding of research comes
from two main sources: The Ministry of Agriculture and external assistance. External funds
are secured through bilateral or multilateral agreements with different donors.
AGERI sought
assistance from bilateral and multilateral donors like UNDP, USAID, ICARDA, FAO,
ROSTAS/UNESCO. A good portion of these funds is allocated for equipment and facility
improvement of laboratories and other research assets. Another part of this support serves
in conducting a series of training courses in genetic engineering, molecular biology and
related fields. AGERI has ongoing scientific collaborations sponsored by the following
organizations:
|
| UNDP |
|
United Nations Development
Program (UNDP), as the funding agency which supported the initial research at AGERI. UNDP
assistance is sought for its neutrality and objectivity. The multilateral nature of UNDP
allows access of the best technology, purchase of the best equipment and the best training
irrespective of where it is found in the industrial world.

| USAID |
|

An agreement for funding research under the new initiatives component of the
USAID funded National Agricultural Research Program (NARP) was signed in 1993. This
activity allowed interaction between AGERI scientists and researchers from a number of
eminent American Universities, i.e. Michigan State University, University of California,
University of Wyoming and the Scripps Research Institute located in California, under the
ABSP (Agricultural Biotechnology for Sustainable Productivity) Project.

| ICARDA |
|
The
International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), located in
Aleppo, Syria, has contracted AGERI for a proposal on Wide Crosses in Lentils and
Embryo Rescue.

| ASRT |
|
Research
funds from University Linkage. Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) and
others have been coming into AGERI. |
